Using a handheld metal detector to detect ingested hooks and other metallic objects in freshwater turtles

چکیده
Turtles can be unintentionally hooked during recreational and commercial fishing operations. While hook ingestion is not always fatal, ingested hooks harm or kill turtles by damaging soft tissues affecting digestion. Detecting other metallic debris in the field a challenge. As such, we tested efficacy of handheld metal detector detecting fish incidental freshwater Georgia, USA. We captured 426 individual representing 4 species radiographed 106 yellow-bellied sliders (Trachemys scripta scripta). Of 37 that positive with detector, radiographs revealed 17 (46%) had at least one hook, 15 (40%) an unidentifiable object objects, 5 (14%) showed no clear signs objects. All 69 negative were ingestion. Accordingly, our proportion false positives was 14% (5 37), negatives (metal detected but on follow-up radiograph) 0% (0 69), overall accuracy 95% (101 turtles). Thus, detectors may useful tool for objects turtles.

Handheld Metal Detector Localization of Ingested Metallic Foreign Bodies
Results: Experienced investigators performed HHMD scans on 140 subjects; inexperienced investigators scanned all subjects. Disease was defined as a foreign body in the esophagus on radiograph. The 3 experienced investigators demonstrated sensitivity of 100% (95% confidence interval [CI], 94%-100%), specificity of 92.4% (95% CI, 84.2%-97.2%), positive predictive value (PPV) of 90.9% (95% CI, 81....

متن کاملPrevalence of Ingested Fish Hooks in Freshwater Turtles from Five Rivers in the Southeastern United States
Freshwater turtles may ingest baited fish hooks because many are opportunistic scavengers. Although the ingestion of fish hooks is known to be a source of mortality in multiple vertebrate groups, the prevalence of hook ingestion by freshwater turtles has not been well studied. We trapped turtles from five rivers in the southeastern United States and used radiographs to examine over 600 individu...
متن کاملDetection of coins ingested by children using a handheld metal detector: a systematic review.
To determine if the use of a handheld metal detector (HHMD) can safely reduce the number of radiographs requested in cases of coins ingested by children, a search was performed to identify prospective studies of the ability of an HHMD to identify the presence or absence of ingested coin in children (17 years or younger). Outcome measures were presence or absence of coin on metal detector screen...
